BOB POTTER

Bob Potter is best known as the creator and host for 15 years of the popular personal finance public radio program Sound Money. Originating from the Minnesota Public Radio studios in St. Paul, Sound Money was syndicated nationally to some 150 stations around the country, and had a weekly audience of some 350,000 listeners. Each week, Sound Money introduced listeners to some of the nation’s most highly respected financial strategists and commentators…including Peter Lynch, Jim Rogers, Steven Leuthold, Mark Hulbert, Jane Bryant Quinn, Burton Malkiel, Muriel Siebert, Ruth Hayden, and many others. Under Bob’s guidance, the program’s reputation grew with listeners over the years for its credible, honest, straightforward, no nonsense explanations of economic and market trends…and for answers to individual financial concerns.

Sound Money was just one part of Bob’s nearly 30 year news broadcasting career at MPR. Through the years, he anchored major news programs at every time of day. In addition to his duties on Sound Money, Bob was the regional anchor for the highly acclaimed Morning Edition, where he conducted hundreds of live newsmaker interviews. Bob also spent several years reporting from the state Capitol on Minnesota government and politics…and was for many years the lead anchor for live events coverage, including a nationwide broadcast of the funeral for Hubert H. Humphrey, as well as state political conventions, election night coverage, and other events.

Seeking a more direct, personal approach to helping people resolve their financial issues, Bob left broadcasting in 2000 to join a Minneapolis financial planning and wealth management firm. Bob became involved directly with many new clients, helping to determine their needs and working with the financial planners to create sensible solutions and investment strategies. He participated in on-going follow up meetings with many clients. He was also involved in crafting the firm’s investment strategies and selecting securities.

On the leading edge of the Baby Boom generation, Bob fully understands and empathizes with the financial uncertainties and anxieties this age group feels as it approaches and enters retirement. He is committed to helping pre-retirees as well as retirees navigate the treacherous financial times we are in. There is nothing quite as stressful as the fear of running out of money before running out of breath.

Bob’s passion is helping people find practical, common sense, cost-effective strategies to their financial concerns. He helps people see past the “news noise” of the moment. He believes in setting and sticking to long-term strategies that offer the best probability of life long success, recognizing that plans need to be flexible to accommodate changing goals and life situations. While keeping up to date on economic and market trends is critical, it’s equally important to avoid the short-term myopia that can leave you bouncing like a marionette on Mr. Market’s string.

Bob became a sought after speaker and commentator, appearing regularly on WCCO radio’s business station (KCCO) and occasionally on KARE 11 television and the Hubbard Broadcasting UHF station, KSTX. He also wrote occasional “Business Insider” columns for the Star Tribune. He spoke frequently to the Minneapolis chapter of AAUW (American Association of University Women) and at Minnesota Orchestra planned giving events. He delivered a presentation on retirement planning to several hundred mid-level executives of one of Minnesota’s best known Fortune 500 companies.

Bob retired in the fall of 2008 but chose to return to the financial service industry in early 2010.
