Welcome to The Sound Money Group!

What is The Sound Money Group?

Sound Money Group has evolved from a radio show called “Sound Money” hosted by Bob Potter. Potter, one of the first employees of the early Minnesota Public Radio, had a knack for straightforward talk and advice about financial matters. People tuned in for advice and stayed because of the uncommon wisdom exchanged between Potter and guests.

Potter’s interest in investing dated from early childhood, when his father invested a small inheritance from his grandfather in a (then) new financial product called a “mutual fund.” Potter got hooked on watching the progress of his nest egg. Soon he was consuming books that explained how stocks, bonds, and other securities related to the economic and business cycles. Although his career path led to broadcasting, his interest in all things financial never waned.

A long-time fan of Louis Rukeyser’s “Wall Street Week” on public television, Bob wondered why there was absolutely nothing related to the world of money on public radio. He began to envision a program dealing with all aspects of personal finance: investing, retirement planning, college planning, estate planning, budgeting, women and money, couples and money, kids and money and beyond. In the mid-1980s, Potter pitched the idea to the public radio station. They liked the idea and sought funding. Several dozen stations beyond Minnesota expressed interest in trying the program. By the time Bob left in 2000, Sound Money was a rousing success and was heard on approximately 150 public stations.
